Acro-yoga as a model to the coaching and counseling process -- Part 2 the Base

In the introduction to the acro-yoga analogy, I introduced the three roles.  We'll take a deeper look at the "Base" this time. From the various pictures, it is clear the base holds everything up.  This role isn't glamorous.  It doesn't get the spotlight.  However, it is a vital role.  It is a role that literally holds up the flyer.  The flyer's poise and confidence comes from the base.  Beyond strength, stamina and flexibility, it is trust that enables this pose.  You can be supremely good as the base and excel in all of the needed skills but if the flyer doesn't trust you, there won't be a pose.  It isn't worth risk. What is trust then?  Our experience would equate it to something being reliable.  I trust the bridge I am using.  I trust the brakes in my car.  I trust the teacher in my class to grade fairly.  There are many other examples but these show that we trust because something has in some way shown itself to b...

From Ruling the Earth and Animals to Ruling Her

I am interrupting the series I started last time for this topic.  It can certainly be combined with the ideas that are coming in the "Foundation" on the "acro-yoga" series.  Have you ever wondered what Ephesians 5 is correcting in the marital relationship?  Not just then at that moment for the Corinthians but fundamentally for both persons.  Where did the relationship go wrong? We'll start at the beginning: Genesis.     26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”        27 So God created mankind in his own image,           in the image of God he created them;           male and female he created them.      28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increas...

Acro-yoga as a model to the coaching and counseling process -- Part 1

Image
First, what is 'Acro-yoga'?  According to wikipedia , it is "is a physical practice that combines yoga and acrobatics."  It is also an activity that involves three persons:  the base, flyer and the spotter. Here's an example from the wiki article. There are more images in the wiki link.  You can search for images and find similar pictures and videos.  The pictures clearly demonstrate the roles of each of the persons involved as well as what it looks like when done well. What does that have to do with Christian Neuro-diverse counseling and coaching?  To understand that you need to understand our model.  Dr. Stephanie puts it this way: "There are 3 steps to our process and well before what would be considered typical marriage work begins, both persons in the relationship are doing individual work.  This individual work requires accountability for both persons.  When  the husband is the ND person, my husband, Dan, will work as a coach...

A Message and Prayer for the Worn and Weary

Many of the wives in our counseling and coaching practice are tired, hurt, worn, perhaps numb and near hopeless.  They wonder if there is life in their relationship and if there can be life in them again.  The dream they had on their marriage day is far from that and while achieving that dream is forever unlikely there is still a wonder if anything can be salvaged.  Living in a grey world that consists of existing instead of living (abundant life) isn't what they had in mind.   With that in mind... Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. (NIV) We'll follow the paradigm laid out in creation: You are made.  God created you uniquely and wonderfully (Psalm 139).  He has a plan for you (Jeremiah 29:11).  He has come to give you life abundant (John 10:10). You may feel formless.  Where do I fit ...

What's Happened in 2 Years?

My last post was over 2 years ago.  I mentioned in that short post that I was moving into coaching on two fronts: Career and Asperger's/ASD. Since then, my wife and I have formed a company called "International Association of Neurodiverse Christian Marriage" (https://www.christianneurodiversemarriage.com/).  The goal is to provide educational materials to professionals, counselors, ministers, coaches and chaplains about the differences that Neurodiverse couples encounter compared to their neurotypical counterparts.  The content is available through an online portal.  We are also producing a weekly podcast.  You can find all of that material on the website. Additionally, we have started using a combined counseling and coaching approach to the Neurodiverse relationship.  This provides all the benefits of both disciplines and helps the parties individually and collectively stay on target for their goals.  You can learn more about that at https://www...

Launching: Life Coaching

After 25+ Years of Adult Life... Experience is life's best teacher.  It is also quicker to advance in yourself and your goals by learning from someone else than by regularly learning from your own mistakes. I have been 'coaching' in my professional life for many years.  With that as a background, I am going to open that to anyone in a technical career looking to accomplish their goals and would like help in getting there. In addition to that, the other niche that I have experience with is in helping those, especially men, with Asperger's grow in life and make their Asperger's work for them instead of against them. There is a lot more to come and more blogs to come.  If you are interested, let me know.
